Fellow anoraks...and bearded academics.... (Dr Evan Harris addressing last Saturday’s Take Back Parliament rally in Westminster.) To be more cynical the crowd was disillusioned Lib Dem and Green Party supporters combined with those of us…

Mostly posts about music plus random tech, football, and nonsense.
Marvellous.
If the BBC has to make cuts they are bound to upset sections of its audience. That audience happens to be me right now with the now confirmed suggestion to close the radio station 6music. I love the BBC.…
Juliana Hatfield has often said that her albums are a reaction to their predecessors. This century she has released the demos turned indie-pop songcraft one, the alt-metal noisy one, the polished AOR one, the abrasive angsty one, the live…
...that make you realise all is well with the world.
I've written here before on Leave Them All Behind by Ride being my favourite ever song. Ride's album Nowhere remains the best debut LP I've heard.…
You'd think that with Keisha leaving Sugababes I would stop mentioning them. But how can I resist this? I haven't made up that picture. There really is a website called www.sugababeslovewindows7.com where the Sugababes...…
Two months ago, I wrote about football trouble which had occurred at the West Ham versus Millwall Carling Cup tie. Amongst my reactionary ranting I highlighted that there was a romanticism attached to hooliganism that a whole new…
The new Natalie Imbruglia album – Come To Life has been delayed at the last minute. It should have been out by now but is, in the UK at least, now shelved until at least February 2010.…
Why am I so energised by the culture of ownership, DRM, and interoperability? Heaven only knows but every press release or feature I read about Spotify sparks something in my head. I have issues with the service - a whole raft of them.…
The current line-up of the Sugababes has disbanded. Heidi Range and Amelle Berrabah will continue as the Sugababes and will be joined by new member Jade Ewen. They release their album ‘Sweet 7’ on November 23rd through Island Records.…
After the disaster that was Wild About It and the 'comedy' video, Natalie has addressed the balance with the new proper single, Want. One of three tracks co-written with Chris Martin off her new album and gorgeous it is too. And the video?…
I've been to nearly every V Festival since it started in 1996. Most of the negative criticism is valid (bland, unimaginative lineups, over commercialisation and general chaviness) but I still like it.…
Being an indie music snob I love being critical, passionate and pompous about popular music. I believe that also loving cheesy throwaway pop is compatible with such snobbery.…
I recently had a chance to catch up on several episodes of the Collings and Herrin podcast, listening to them in a marathon session in my travels to a university summer course.…
Supporting a football team involves a ridiculous (and frankly disproportionate) level of emotional investment. Unless you're a fan of a team that wins trophies every year, logic would suggest that a return can never be achieved.…
") I've just heard that Swells has died. He was the NME's most notorious music writer in the 80's and 90's. An irritating provocateur, and a vulgar contradictory angry man.…
I'm a sucker for 'side projects' of my favourite bands. A real sucker because after I buy the records I then realise that they're crap. I've never really liked any offshoots of The Wedding Present / Cinerama.…
I used to love eMusic. It is a subscription service offering a number of mp3 downloads for a monthly fee. They had to cancel my membership a couple of years ago when they stopped supporting my preferred payment method.…
I originally wrote this journal entry in January 2009 on last.fm: I was 20 - an adult. Of sorts. I had been in employment for a year.…
