Hilary Mantel v the Duchess of Cambridge: a story of lazy journalism and raging hypocrisy | Hadley Freeman | Comment is free | The Guardian

Hadley Freeman in the Guardian:

It is worth looking at what is going on here. Lazy journalism, clearly, and raging hypocrisy, obviously: what has any paper done with Kate for the past decade but use her as decorative page filler? Indeed, when the BBC covered Mantelgate (Mantelpiece?) it included lingering shots of the duchess's fair form while quoting in horror from Mantel's speech about the royal women existing to be admired. This is also a good example of how the Mail fights back when it feels it is being attacked...

Excellent commentary. Worth reading the whole article.

The Courteeners - Not Nineteen Forever (Reading Festival 2012)

I have this theory that no matter how generic or dull a band is, if a group of people can play some instruments and write a few original songs, they'll hit gold at least once.

I believe that every band has a killer song in them. Yes, I'm going on about Chasing Rainbows by Shed Seven. You knew that.

For a few years, my view on The Courteeners has been rather dominated by Not Nineteen Forever. It's a classic indie anthem, but I didn't think there was much else to this band, having seen them a couple of times at festivals.

I've been listening to their latest album 'ANNA' quite a bit though and they may be due a reappraisal. There's some pretty smart lyrics on there.
